The global Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) market represents a pivotal frontier within the aviation industry, offering a compelling solution to address its substantial greenhouse gas emissions. SAF, a biofuel engineered for aircraft, closely mimicking the characteristics of conventional jet fuel while significantly reducing carbon emissions, is reshaping the aviation landscape. The US government plans to reach 3 billion gallons per year of domestically produced renewable jet production with at least a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030. In December 2022, The U.S. EPA finalized approval Dec. 1 of canola/rapeseed oil for use as renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) feedstock under the Renewable Fuel Standard, allowing hydrotreated fuels made from canola and rapeseed oils to qualify for the program and generate renewable identification number (RIN) credits.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a final determination that canola oil-based renewable diesel, SAF, naphtha, heating oil, and liquified petroleum gas (propane) met the lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction requirement of at least 50 percent under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) to qualify as advanced biofuels.

In 2024, Biofuel type Sustainable Aviation Fuel accounted for the dominant 55.9% market share. The use of feedstock including agricultural waste, cooking oil, and non-food crops for the production of renewable jet fuel predominantly drives new product launches. In 2024, Neste announced the launch of Neste MY Renewable Jet Fuel sourced from waste fats and oils. Similarly, World Energy launched its SAF Hub in the US and partnered with Shell Aviation. Fulcrum BioEnergy is also focusing conversion of residential garbage to jet fuel (Fulcrum Fuel). United Airlines operated its first commercial aircraft using Gevo's bio-based SAF.
Commercial Aviation End-Users accounted for 53.1% market share in 2024.
